There are basically 3 Mexican restaurants that I frequent regularly on Rivers Avenue. La Nortena (across the street from La Hacienda) Los Reyes, and La Hacienda, affectionately referred to as La Ha. They are all 3 great. There are several La Hacienda restaurants in town, but this particular La Hacienda is the one I'm most familiar with and I think it's very good. No high turnover of staff, food is consistently good, and the margaritas are always good. I have gone to this restaurant pretty much every week or so since January 1999 and have never had a bad experience there; NEVER. That's why I keep going back.

Food was quick, delicious, & fresh. Staff was sweet, understanding, and quick. Location: near the interstate in north charleston. Not much to do around other than river front park or park circle but if your passing through and need some Mexican, I would recommend it over La Nortena which is also nearby.

So, we enjoyed it but there were a number of negatives that made me give it only 3 stars. They serve chips and salsa gratis, which is a good thing. I had the Carnitas Burritos which were good - not especially great, which was an OK thing. So - the negatives: 2 out of our 4 plates had some serious chips in them along the edges. The waiter brought the wrong beverage (but quickly changed it for the correct one without issue). The waiter forgot to bring more salsa when we asked, but again, quickly brought some the second time we asked. Took a LONG time to get the check; they were busy but not swamped. If in the area again we try it again, but wouldn't seek it out. Nicely priced.

I had sizzling steak fajitas, which really were sizzling and quite delicious! They were served with flour tortillas, Mexican rice, refried beans with melted cheese, lettuce, chopped tomatoes, guacamole and sour cream!! Hmmm hmmmm!!!! The steak was cooked with onions and red and green bell peppers and cooked to perfection, I could eat more right now, in fact I think I will cause there was so much food for the price that I brought home leftovers! !! Yay!!!! I will definitely go back for another visit!!

Stopped here on my birthday last month and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I tend to avoid the vast majority of mexican restaurants in the area due to bland and greasy food. Thankfully, this location was a vast improvement over the typical place. The food was fresh, the drinks were plentiful, and the service was plentiful. As is par for the course, I had a hard time understanding and communicating with my server, but he was very friendly and delivered the appropriate items--meals and drinks--although he was unable to answer certain questions and explain the difference between the pre made guacamole and the tableside guacamole. The Bahama Mama was enormous... I would have asked for the small if I knew it was going to be that large, but it was very tasty! As for the decor, it was the typical american mexican style.. unfortunately the booths appeared well worn and had tears in the seats. Warning to the ladies if you enjoy drinks and a meal here don't wear anything nice. Definitely casual attire.

I ordered the combination #3 and was very disappointed. The chili relleno was nothing like a relleno. It was a small bit of hamburger and about a 1" square piece of over cooker pepper over cooked in a canned cheese sauce under a 3" piece of flour tortilla. The chicken taco was on a flour tortilla and the chicken was very salty. The enchilada sauce was also canned. This is the worst excuse for a Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, and I have eaten Mexican food all over the us and Mexico. Save your money and go someplace else. The menu also lists a sopapilla as a fried flour tortilla with honey and cinnamon on it.

My wife and I went here with my two young daughters. Overall the experience was great. My wife went to school in the area and had eaten at this place before an talked it up. She might of over talked it but it was still a nice place. Great atmosphere, clean, food was ok. I had a fajita quesadilla which was really good. Creamy. Overall good experience.

Horrible customer service, melted frozen margaritas, gross guacamole, stale chips - Horrible experience, I will never eat here again. If you are looking for this type of food go to Senor Tequila or Juanita Greenbergs for the same price and better food!!!!! I had a waiter named Carlos and he was a cocky little teenager who was rude, condescending and incompetent. We were there with a few people from our office on a work dinner, we asked for the music to get turned down just a tad (it was loud in the bar area). he told us no. He had a terrible attitude!

This is my wife's and my favorite quick dinner place to eat. I've been going there since they opened (remember when they had live music!). We stop in here when we just want a quick dinner. The food here is always good and once (out of maybe the 120 or so times I've been here) we got some poor service from a waiter I don't see anymore. If there is any problem whatsoever just talk to the manager. This is a blue collar place to eat, nothing fancy, but the food and service are good.

La Hacienda restaurant was a complete surprise. My wife and I were gonna go to the Mexican place a cross the street that had better reviews. But I just had a gut feeling La Hacienda would be better and BAM! We were welcomed and seated immediately upon entering. We had our drinks and chips and salsa with minutes and they were good. For a mexican food joint, the sweet tea there was great. I ordered the quesadilla with beef and it was full of flavor. It tasted authentic and the cheese they used added another dimension to the quesadilla. Our waiter was great too. He showed good patience when we took our time placing our orders. He also kept our cups full and chips and salsa coming. The decor of the restaurant looked like what you would expect when eating at a mexican joint. It was clean and inviting. They had the Spanish music up a little too loud but it was all good. They also offer military discounts which I didn't take advantage of because the food was so good I didn't want a discount. La Hacienda sets the bar high when it comes to Mexican food in Chuck Town.

This was my boyfriend's favorite Mexican place when he used to live in Charleston. I trust his judgment 100% when it comes to food...but when I walked in and saw the neon EVERYWHERE, my judgment wavered, just a tad. But he came through again, the food here was fabulous and our server was great. I ordered the arroz con pollo but was a little nervous since the menu described a "nacho cheese sauce". I had visions of bad cheese whiz swirling around my plate...I don't know why I was so untrusting that day. Luckily it didn't resemble cheese whiz at all...I think they might have actually used some queso blanco. Whatever it was, it was fabulous and I had no complaints about any part of the dish. I especially liked the little taco salad they gave you on the side, complete with hard tortilla and guacamole. My boyfriend ordered a beef chimichanga and it was fabulous. Our server was very polite, checked on us at all the right times, and kept our glasses full. They weren't too busy on a Monday evening, but the next day we drove by around lunchtime and between them and the fish place next door the parking lot was packed. Entrees are a couple of dollars cheaper here than at most Mexican restaurants I've been to so I'm hovering at about 4.5 stars.

I would echo the previous review. From the stet, unassuming...even a "hole in the wall". But food was great, service good, and very reasonably priced. Kudos

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
